Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on a loaf of supermarket bread and wondered why it reads like a chemistry experiment? You aren't alone. Across Australia, more people are waking up to what is in our food.
The conversation around nutrition is shifting. It is no longer about counting calories or tracking macros. It is about how our food is made. At the centre of this shift is the rising concern over Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs). But what are they, why are they everywhere, and why does returning to real, ancestral food matter?
What Exactly is an Ultra-Processed Food?
Processing food isn't new. For centuries, humans have cooked, fermented, preserved, and milled food to make it safe and digestible. But the modern food industry has taken processing to an extreme.
Under the internationally recognised NOVA classification system, ultra-processed foods sit at the end of the spectrum. These aren't modified foods. They are industrial formulas made from extracted substances or synthesised in labs.
Look at the label of an ultra-processed food product, and you will find ingredients you would never keep in your pantry, artificial colours, synthetic flavours, emulsifiers, thickeners, and modified starches. These ingredients are added to make the food more palatable (so you eat more of it), extend its shelf life, and cut production costs.
Common culprits include packaged snacks, sugary cereals, soft drinks, and mass-produced breads. Surprisingly, even products marketed as "healthy", like some protein bars, vegan meat alternatives, and low-fat yoghurts, often fall straight into the ultra-processed category.
The Hidden Cost of Convenience
The convenience of ultra-processed foods comes at a cost. A massive 2024 review of 45 meta-analyses, covering nearly 10 million people, found consistent evidence linking high ultra-processed food intake to 32 different adverse health outcomes.
High intake of ultra-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and common mental health disorders like anxiety and depression.
Why are they a problem? It comes down to a few factors:
• Nutrient Void: ultra-processed foods are usually high in refined sugars and seed oils, but stripped of essential vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre.
• The Emulsifier Effect: Emerging research suggests the industrial additives used to bind these foods can disrupt our gut microbiome, leading to inflammation.
• Hyper-Palatability: These foods are engineered to bypass our natural fullness signals. Because they are often pre-digested and soft, we eat them fast, leading to blood sugar spikes.
In Australia, the data is stark. Ultra-processed foods now make up nearly half (42% to 56%) of the average adult's diet. We are fuelling our bodies with synthetic experiments rather than real nourishment.
The Confusion in the Aisles
Identifying ultra-processed foods can be confusing. A recent study showed many Australian shoppers struggle to tell the difference between minimally processed foods and ultra-processed ones.
Packaging is often the problem. A product might claim to be "high in protein" or "gluten-free," yet the ingredient list is packed with vegetable gums and artificial sweeteners. This is where the core philosophy of clean eating matters. It isn't about what a food doesn't have. It is about what it does have. If a food requires a chemistry degree to understand, your body will probably struggle to process it.
The Paleo Hero Approach: Returning to Real
Long before the current backlash against ultra-processed foods, Paleo Hero was built on one simple rule: food should be real. We saw a gap for families who wanted genuinely clean, grain-free options without relying on preservatives.
When we talk about ancestral eating, we mean returning to foods our bodies evolved to recognise. We rely on whole nuts, seeds, natural fats, and unrefined ingredients.
Every morning in our facility, we hand-make and hand-pack our products. When you check the back of our Primal Muesli or our baking mixes, you only see real food. No numbers, no hidden emulsifiers, and zero preservatives. We do the hard work of sourcing and preparing 100% natural ingredients so you don't have to compromise.
How to Break the UPF Cycle
Moving away from ultra-processed foods doesn't need to be complicated. Here are four practical steps to start:
1 Read the Ingredients, Not the Marketing: Ignore the bold claims on the front. Turn the packet over. If it contains items you wouldn't cook with at home, leave it on the shelf.
2 Focus on Whole Foods: Base your meals around fresh vegetables, quality proteins, and healthy fats.
3 Upgrade Your Breakfast: Commercial cereals are notoriously ultra-processed. Swap the extruded flakes for a bowl of nutrient-dense Primal Muesli or Primal Choc Granola, packed with natural fibre.
4 Cook from Scratch (When You Can): Preparing meals at home gives you control. When you need a shortcut, choose brands that use whole-food ingredients. And when you want something sweet, reach for raw honey or coconut nectar instead of refined sugar — your body knows the difference.
The shift away from ultra-processed foods is a vital return to how we are meant to eat. At Paleo Hero, we are proud to champion real food. Because when it comes to feeling good, real food always wins.
